Pages 244-248 | Published online: 28 Sep 2010

REFERENCES

  • Clapesattle H. The Doctors Mayo. Minneapolis, MN: The University of Minnesota Press; 1941. (For someone who is interested in finding a complete legacy and extremely well-told story about the lives of the Mayo brothers, this is the book, the best written about the Mayos at any point in history. It has 822 pages but is highly recommendable to anyone interested in the History of American Medicine and particularly in surgery during the Mayos’ times.)
  • Crofford E. Frontier Surgeons: A Story About the Mayo Brothers. Minneapolis, MN: Carolrhoda Books; 1989. (This is a small 56-page book that is worth reading if the story of the Mayos can be summarized and told in brief. Even though the book is presented for older children or young adults, it is recommended as another good story related to Mayo fame.)
  • Davis L. The Mayo Brothers. Doctors to the World. Danbury, CT: Children's Press, Grolier Publishing; 1998. (With 43 pages, this book for children tells the Mayos’ story very well. All the important elements are considered and could be used as a refresher when reviewing the Mayos’ life and accomplishments.)
  • Nagel GW. The Mayo Legacy. Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas; 1966. (This is a 157-page book presented by someone who lived the Mayo dream from 1922–1928, first as a fellow in surgery and then as an assistant to Dr. E. Starr Judd. The examples and story he tells are based on personal experiences and, therefore, very valuable when examining the events of the Mayo era. The book is also recommended for a more complete review.)
  • Clapesattle H. The Mayo Brothers. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin; 1962. (This is another great book by the most accomplished Mayo biographer. This 180-page book is not as extensive as her 1941 classic biography, but not less important as she introduces some concepts that are worth reviewing in this short edition. Highly recommended as another great Mayo book.)
