About this journal

Aims and scope

Critical Reviews in Toxicology publishes review articles on toxicology and the application of toxicological information to assess human health hazards and risks.

Critical Reviews in Toxicology provides objective analyses of topics related to the mechanisms of action, responses, and assessment of health risks due to toxicant exposure. Toxicants of concern include:

  • Commodity and specialty chemicals such as formaldehyde, acrylonitrile, and pesticides
  • Pharmaceutical agents of all types
  • Consumer products such as macronutrients and food additives
  • Environmental agents such as ambient ozone
  • Occupational exposures such as asbestos and benzene
Reviews can cover toxicological responses that range from observations at the molecular and cellular level to physiological and pathological alterations in intact mammals and populations of laboratory animals and people. Responses in all major organ systems are of interest, with emphasis on those identified as human diseases or their precursor events, such as cancer, reproductive and developmental effects.

Critical Reviews in Toxicology welcomes review manuscripts which integrate information from multiple levels of biological organization in order to estimate health risks in the context of relevant human exposures in the environment, in the workplace, and as a result of the use of consumer products and pharmaceuticals.

The journal operates a single-anonymized peer review policy. Authors can choose to publish gold open access in this journal.
