Aims and scope

Journal of Contemporary East Asia Studies is an open access journal offering in-depth studies of contemporary East Asia.

It is the official journal of the Waseda Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies and the Waseda Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies based out of Waseda University in Japan.

The primary aim of the journal is to foster diverse perspectives on the major sub-areas of contemporary East Asia through the publication of both local and international authors.

Journal of Contemporary East Asia Studies publishes research that covers political, economic, and social developments in contemporary East Asia including but not limited to:

  • Domestic politics throughout East Asia
  • International relations, foreign policy and trade
  • Economic development
  • Migration and demographics
  • Climate change and environmental policy
  • China as a major power

The journal publishes original research articles and operates a single-anonymized peer review policy.

Society information

Waseda University is a leading private, non-profit institution of higher education based in central Tokyo, with over 50,000 students in 13 undergraduate and 20 graduate schools. The Waseda Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (WIAPS) was established in July 1997 in order to contribute to the peace and development of the Asia-Pacific region and global society. The Institute aims to construct a research and education network as well as become a source of abundant research results and information in diverse fields in the regional contexts.
