Aims and scope

Journal of Borderlands Studies is the primary publication of the Association for Borderlands Studies, which has distinguished itself as a leading forum for border research. Widely consulted by researchers, but also by educators and practitioners, the journal encourages the submission of papers from all social science and humanities focusing on border issues, bordering dynamics and borderlands in any part of the world. The emphasis on borders is global.

The distinctive purpose of Journal of Borderlands Studies as an international journal is to publish original research covering the development of theories and concepts, methodological perspectives, empirical analysis and policy debate in the field of border studies. The journal is a interdisciplinary forum, which showcases diverse perspectives and analytical techniques.

Peer Review Statement

All submissions to this journal undergo rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and double-anonymized review by at least two referees, although in many instances three referees are used.

Society information

The Association for Borderlands Studies (ABS) is the leading international scholarly association dedicated exclusively to the systematic interchange of ideas and information relating to international border areas. Founded in 1976 with the original emphasis on the study of the United States-Mexico borderlands region, the Association has grown steadily. It now encompasses an interdisciplinary membership of scholars at more than one hundred academic, governmental institutions, and NGOs representing the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe.

The Association maintains relations with institutions and associations with similar interests in the Americas and Europe. The Journal of Borderlands Studies presents leading research on border issues. The ABS annual meeting provides a forum for a wide range of topics on border regions around the world. The ABS also co-sponsors other meetings on border topics.
