About this journal

Aims and scope

Journal of Modern Italian Studies (JMIS) is one of the leading English language forums for debate and discussion on modern Italy. The journal publishes five issues a year, each containing scholarly articles and book reviews relating to the political, economic, cultural, and social history of modern Italy from 1700 to the present. JMIS is especially committed to promoting the study of modern and contemporary Italy in transnational contexts.

The journal:

  • publishes in English the work of Italian and non-Italian specialists
  • features the work of historians, political scientists and theorists, anthropologists, sociologists, economists, and cultural historians, as well as specialists in fields such as literature, cultural studies, fine arts and cinema
  • organizes debates amongst leading experts on major themes in modern Italian history, culture, economics, and society
  • provides comprehensive critical reviews and discussions in English of new publications on these topics in Italian, English, and other languages.


Peer Review Statement

All research articles published in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two anonymous referees.
