Advances in Ophthalmic Surgery
Although optometrists do not perform ophthalmic surgery, they need to be aware of current approaches to the surgical management of all forms of ophthalmic disorders to be in a position to understand available options and make appropriate referrals. As well, patients may make enquiries as to what might be involved in a particular surgical intervention, and a general knowledge of different surgical approaches in current use will equip the clinician to properly engage in such discussions.
This virtual issue covers recent advances in ophthalmic surgery. It collates a series of contemporary perspectives and review papers authored by leading optometrists and ophthalmologists, and covers current approaches to the surgical management of conditions that may arise from optometric referral, such as the controversial technique of restoration of accommodation, collagen cross-linking for keratoconus, cataract surgery, refractive surgery and corneal transplantation for keratoconus. Additional papers relevant to this topic will be added to this virtual issue as they are published over time.
