21st Century Clinical Techniques
Like any other health care field, optometry has benefited from the availability of instrumentation and techniques made possible through technological advances in computing; data storage, analysis and transmission; and digital image capture. In almost every case, initial prototypes of new instruments have been extremely expensive, but as the demand for these technologies grows and competing commercial entities enter the fray, prices come down and these technologies become widely deployed in clinical practice.
Having a shiny new instrument in your practice is one thing, but using it to best advantage for the ocular well-being of your patients is another. In this virtual issue, we bring together papers that have been published in Clinical and Experimental Optometry over the past two decades that explore the clinical utility of relatively new technologies such as videokeratoscopy (corneal topography evaluation), optical coherence tomography and electrophysiology. Papers are also included that cover more traditional techniques in a modern context, such as colour vision and visual field testing. No doubt, more papers will be added to this virtual issue as technology advances, and techniques and applications that we have not even dreamed of are developed (and written about).
