About this journal

Aims and scope

The Journal of Health Equity is an international, broad scope, sound science, interdisciplinary and interprofessional Gold Open Access journal. It focuses on advancing research, policy, and practice relevant to Health Equity and the reduction of disparities in health. The Journal aims to be the premier destination for discussion and dissemination of new and innovative research in the health equity field and related disciplines.

The Editor welcomes rigorous original research from diverse fields illuminating the complex causes of health inequity and evaluations of efforts to promote health equity. In addition to publishing original research, the Journal of Health Equity seeks to create a dialogue amongst researchers of different disciplines on how to put into practice improvements to equity in healthcare through the inclusion of case studies, policy analyses, and discussion pieces.


The Journal welcomes submissions on the following topics:
• Health Equity principles, frameworks, and theories
• Health policy, administration, services and systems
• Health inequalities and social determinants of health
• Public health and community partnerships
• Racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic disparities
• Maternal, newborn, and child health
• Aging adults and chronic health disparities
• Women’s reproductive health and contraception
• Indigenous communities
• Health justice
• Epidemiology and population health sciences
• Implementation, improvement, and interprofessional science
• Nursing, medicine, and allied health professional perspectives and roles

Papers published in the Journal of Health Equity are characterised by:

  • A clear argument, which makes a meaningful contribution to the scholarship of health equity and informs contemporary debates on health and social system change; 
  • Transparent, ethical, rigorous, and detailed methodological approacth, which allows for an assessment of the strength of evidence;
  • Contextualization within the existing literature, clearly demonstrating current gaps in knowledge and how the paper addresses these;
  • Consisten use of health equity terms, with concepts used clearly defined;
  • Interventions, initiatives, or experiences reported in sufficient detail to allow assessment and/or replication;
  • Strong, clear, evidence-based, and forward-looking recommendations for promoting health equity within health and social systems at local, national, or global level.

Authors and reviewers are encouraged to refer to the JHE Checklist in preparing or assessing manuscripts for the Journal of Health Equity .
