Ethnography in qualitative educational research: AMEE Guide No. 80

Scott ReevesUniversity of California, USA; SCOTT REEVES, PhD, is the Founding Director of the Center of Innovation in Interprofessional Education, Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, USA, and also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Interprofessional Care. He is a social scientist who has been undertaking health professions education and health services research for nearly 20 years. His main interests are focused on developing conceptual, empirical and theoretical knowledge to inform the design and implementation of interprofessional education and practice activities. To date, he has received over $16 m in grant capture and has undertaken a number of ethnographic studies in a range of health care and education contexts. Currently, he is principal investigator on a $2.1 m grant to undertake ethnographic work exploring the nature of collaboration in intensive care units across North America. He has also published numerous peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, textbooks, reports and monographs. His work is widely cited, and an increasing number of his books and chapters have been translated from English to a number other languages including Japanese, Norwegian and Russian.Correspondence[email protected]

Jennifer PellerUniversity of Toronto, Canada; JENNIFER PELLER, MA, is a Research Associate at the Office for Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University in Toronto, Canada. She obtained her masters degree in Medical Anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She has undertaken a growing number of qualitative studies in health services and health professions education and has a particular interest in ethnographic work.

Joanne GoldmanUniversity of Toronto, Canada; JOANNE GOLDMAN, MSc, is a doctorate student at the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Toronto, Canada. She received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Doctoral Research Award for her ethnographic study that aims to examine the processes of interprofessionalism in relation to discharge in general internal medicine and the socio-cultural and structural factors that influence these practices. She is currently a Research Associate at Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. In addition, she works as managing editor of the Journal of Interprofessional Care. During the past 14 years, Joanne has worked in various research units at the University of Toronto.

Simon KittoUniversity of Toronto, Canada; SIMON KITTO, PhD, is the Director of Research in Continuing Education and Professional Development; an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, and a Scientist at Wilson Centre for Research in Education, University of Toronto, Canada. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Interprofessional Care and Journal of Continuing Education for Heath Professions. Simon is interested in conducting research on, and building research capacity within, the intersections between Continuing Education, Knowledge Translation, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in healthcare. He has been conducting ethnographic studies in the higher education and health care sectors since 1997.
