ABSTRACT

In recent years, with the emergence of complex lighting technology, people are more exposed to artificial light sources, and people are more concerned about the damage of light to eyes. While the eyes have adapted several mechanisms to protect themselves from this damage, certainly exposure to light can still cause temporary or permanent damage. Blue light has been reported to be more damaging than white and green light. Blue light can cause retinal degeneration and is a major cause of the onset and development of severe age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This review introduces the protective effects of various antioxidants on blue light-induced retinal damage based on cell models in a more realistic biological environment and points out the direction for the prevention of retinal blue light damage and future research.
