The EJGP Collection on Multimorbidity
Whereas medical specialists can focus on one disease group, general practitioners (family physicians) deal with patients with a broad spectrum of health problems. Most consultations by the general practitioner (family physician) concern patients with multimorbidity. In primary care, multimorbidity is the rule, not the exception. This situation requires highly developed clinical reasoning skills, patient-centred communication and interprofessional collaboration.
In Volume 2 (1996), the European Journal of General Practice (EJGP) published a review article on multimorbidity by Marjan van den Akker et al. In this essential paper, the concepts 'multimorbidity' and 'comorbidity' were distinguished and defined. Since then, many articles on multimorbidity have made their way to this Journal. They are bundled in this Collection. It is regularly updated with new publications addressing the many diagnostic and treatment challenges associated with multimorbidity in primary care.
Note: You can find articles about 'polypharmacy' in another collection.
