Frequently asked questions

How much is the Open Access article publishing charge (APC)?
APCs vary by journal and are subject to occasional special offers. Please check the instructions for authors on the journal’s web page to confirm the current APC. You can also find the standard APC for any Taylor & Francis journal by visiting our open access cost finder. Please note that these charges are exclusive of tax.

How is the Open Access article publishing charge (APC) paid?
The APC should be paid after an article has been rigorously peer-reviewed and been accepted by the journal editor. Corresponding authors will receive an invoice outlining payment terms. As a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), Taylor & Francis subscribe to their code of conduct.

Can the article publishing charge (APC) be discounted or waived?
Authors publishing in many of our fully open access Taylor & Francis or Routledge Open journals may be eligible for a full or partial waiver of the APC if they are based in countries classified by the World Bank as ‘Low-Income Economies’ or ‘Lower-Middle-Income Economies’ and which also have a gross domestic product (GDP) of less than 200 billion US dollars. Please visit our Author Services site for details about APC discounts and waivers.

We are also partnering with institutions and funders around the world to help researchers publish gold open access in their chosen journals. These agreements can mean that individual authors benefit from much reduced article publishing charges (APCs) or that they are able to publish open access at no cost to themselves. Find out if you’re eligible for this open access publishing support.

Are any taxes applicable?
Authors resident in any of the countries of the European Union have to add U.K. Value-Added Tax (VAT, currently 20%). Institutions outside the U.K. paying the APC on behalf of the author, and who provide their VAT registration number, will not be charged U.K. VAT.

Under what circumstances are refunds made?
If we (Taylor and Francis) reasonably consider that the article should not be published for any reason - including, but not limited to, a breach of your author warranties - we may decline to publish the article or rescind acceptance of the article. After publication, we may retract or remove the article from publication if we reasonably consider this is necessary to ensure the integrity of the scholarly record.

In any of the above situations, we shall be entitled to retain any Article Publishing Charge you have paid, and any decision to refund the Article Publishing Charge shall be guided by our Open Access policies.

What license options are available when publishing OA?
We offer the following Creative Commons licenses (4.0) for researchers choosing to publish OA:

What restrictions on reuse apply?
Please see our Terms & Conditions for more details.

What funding agreements are available to help researchers publish open access?
We’re partnering with groups of institutions around the world to help researchers publish gold OA in their chosen journals. These consortia agreements can mean that authors benefit from reduced APCs, or that they are able to publish OA at no cost to themselves. Find out if you’re eligible for this open access support.

If your institution isn’t included in one of our OA agreements, it may have a central fund to support researchers who want to publish open access. Many institutions also hold an open access membership with Taylor & Francis Group. Researchers based at these institutions may be eligible to publish gold open access in Taylor & Francis Group journals at no cost to themselves. View a list of current members.

Is an OA journal list available?
Yes, you can search and download our open access options finder (including details on current APCs, Green and Gold OA options by journal, license details, and embargo periods for Green OA) from our Author Services website.

What is your policy on data sharing?
Taylor & Francis offers a suite of data sharing policies, which range from encouraging authors to share and cite data to making data open.

What is the subscription pricing policy for Taylor & Francis hybrid (Open Select) journals?
When a peer-reviewed article is accepted by a Taylor & Francis subscription journal, the author, their institution and funder, can choose to make that article open access on publication, usually following the payment of an article publishing charge (APC). These open access articles are published in addition to the subscription content planned for that journal in the current volume year.

This means that subscribers to Taylor & Francis journals pay only for the subscription content and services they receive, irrespective of how many open access articles are also accepted for publication. Taylor & Francis does not receive both subscription payments and an APC for publishing the same article.

We closely monitor the content of every journal and will adjust subscription prices for those titles where increased demand for OA publication is causing a decline in subscription content. We will also continue to convert hybrid journals to our full OA program (Taylor & Francis Open) when most authors are choosing to publish their articles open access.

This applies to subscription journals owned by Taylor & Francis. We recommend that our society partners also adopt this as we believe it is the fairest approach.
