Abstract
The article describes the process of producing a valid and reliable Communication Styles Questionnaire (CSQ) by which teachers of 16‐19 year old students, in English post‐compulsory education, may monitor and evaluate how they tend to interact with their students. The purpose of doing so is to promote self‐directed professional development and not to judge teachers. Teachers are provided with a means to reflect accurately about what they tend to communicate, in their own perceptions and in those of their students. The article gives an account of the rationale for the project; describes the research methods used; gives evidence of the validity and reliability of the CSQ; and points forward to further research.
