Engaging with mathematics in the kindergarten. Orchestrating a fairy tale through questioning and use of tools

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to analyse how a kindergarten teacher orchestrated a mathematical activity involving a fairy tale. Taking a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, naturally occurring talk-in-interaction has been analysed in order to scrutinise the subtleties of the orchestration. The fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears was used both as context for the activity, but also as a means through which mathematical concepts were engaged with. The analysis shows that the orchestration bears characteristics of questioning and use of tools such as voice, facial expressions, and concrete materials. The orchestration is also characterised by sincere planning in advance of the activity and by addressing pre-formulated learning objectives.

RÉSUMÉ

The but de cette étude est d'analyser la façon dont un éducateur de jardin d'enfants orchestre une activité mathématique qui comprend un conte. Dans une perspective socioculturelle des apprentissages et du développement, les conversations spontanées ont été analysées dans le but d'examiner les subtilités de l'orchestration. Le conte Boucles d'or et les trois ours a été utilisé à la fois comme contexte pour l'activité et comme moyen pour mobiliser des concepts mathématiques. L'analyse montre que l'orchestration se caractérise par le questionnement et l'utilisation de moyens tels que la voix, les expressions faciales et les matériaux concrets. L'orchestration est aussi caractérisée par une planification minutieuse de l'activité et par des objectifs d'apprentissage formulés à l'avance.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Das Ziel dieser Studie ist die Analyse der Orchestrierung einer mathematischen Aktivität im Kontext einer Märchenerzählung durch eine Kindergartenfachkraft. Im Rahmen einer soziokulturellen Perspektive auf Lernen und Entwicklung wurden natürlich auftretende Gespräche-in-Interaktion mit Blick auf die Feinheit der Orchestrierung untersucht. Dabei wurde das Märchen ‘Goldilocks und die drei Bären’ für zweierlei eingesetzt: als Kontext für die Aktivität und auch als ein Mittel, durch das mathematische Konzepte angesprochen werden. Die Analyse zeigt, dass die Orchestrierung Merkmale des Fragens sowie Hilfsmittel wie Stimme, Gesichtsausdruck und Spielgegenstände enthält. Zudem zeichnet sich die Orchestrierung durch sorgfältige Vorausplanung der Aktivität und durch das Anstreben vorab formulierter Lernziele aus.

RESUMEN

El objetivo de este estudio es analizar cómo un maestro de educación infantil organiza una actividad matemática que incluye un cuento de hadas. Desde una perspectiva sociocultural sobre el aprendizaje y el desarrollo, el diálogo interactivo natural ha sido analizado con el fin de examinar las sutilezas de la organización de la actividad. El cuento de Ricitos de oro y los tres osos han sido utilizados en dos aspectos, como el contexto para la actividad, y como el medio en el cual están involucrados los conceptos matemáticos. El análisis muestra que dicha organización tiene las características de un diálogo basado en preguntas y muestra también la importancia de herramientas como la voz, las expresiones faciales y el uso de materiales concretos. Dicha organización también se caracteriza por una buena planificación, anterior al desarrollo de la actividad, y por la atención a los objetivos de aprendizaje formulados con anterioridad.
