An early childhood research laboratory framework: necessity the mother of invention

ABSTRACT

This article provides a subjective personal introspection of the attempt to develop and maintain an Early Childhood Research Laboratory (ECRL) at the University of Cyprus and a description of the first activities undertaken by the ECRL. I specifically illustrate the process of legitimising the need for an ECRL at the University of Cyprus and provide a depiction of the actions taken within the university community to set it up and the strategic moves to support the continuation of its existence. Then, a description of the activities of the ECRL are presented proposing a reconceptualised view of the role of a research lab, one which eliminates the compartmentalisation of the three missions of lab schools through the tenet of communities of practice. Particular premises are discussed to support the integration of the three-fold mission of labs and a case study of a research programme is presented through the communities of practice highlighting the three missions.

RESUME

Ce texte propose une analyse personnelle de la tentative de développer et de faire vivre un Laboratoire de Recherche sur l'Education de la Petite Enfance (LREPE) à l'Université de Chypre, et une description des premières activités entreprises par ce laboratoire. Plus précisément, je montre le processus de légitimation du besoin d'un LREPE à l'Université de Chypre et je décris les actions engagées au sein de la communauté universitaire pour le mettre en place et les démarches stratégiques entreprises pour assurer sa pérennité. Ensuite, je décris les activités du LREPE en proposant une reconceptualisation de notre vision du rôle d'un laboratoire de recherche, qui élimine le décloisonnement des trois missions des laboratoires éducatifs en utilisant le principe des communautés de pratique. Je discute ensuite de prémisses spécifiques pour soutenir l'intégration des trois missions des laboratoires et présente l’étude d'un programme de recherche à l'aide des communautés des pratiques, mettant en évidence les trois missions.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Der Beitrag stellt Aufbau, Entwicklung und erste Aktivitäten eines Forschungslabors für Forschung in der Frühpädagogik (ECLR) an der Universtiät Zypern aus subjektiv-persönlicher Sicht dar. Insbesondere wird der Prozess beschrieben, mit dem der Bedarf für ein solches Zentrum legitimiert wurde, sowie die Aktivitäten und Strategien, mit denen der Aufbau und der Erhalt des Labours im Kontext der Universitätsgemeinschaft ermöglicht wurden. Die nachfolgende Beschreibung der Aktivitäten des ECLR führt zu einer Neukonzeption der Rolle von Forschungslaboratorien, die die Partialisierung ihrer drei Aufgaben (Ausbildung, Dienstleistungen und Forschung) durch einen praxisorientierten Ansatz aufhebt. Die Integration dieser drei Bereiche wird anhand von spezifischen Voraussetzungen der Arbeit der Laboratorien sowie am Beispiel eines Forschungsprogramms diskutiert.

RESUMEN

Este trabajo presenta una reflexión personal y subjetiva acerca de la implementación y mantenimiento de un Laboratorio de Investigación de Educación Temprana, así como una descripción de las primeras actividades llevadas a cabo en dicho laboratorio. Específicamente, ilustra el proceso de legitimización del laboratorio requerido por la Universidad de Chipre. Y provee una descripción de las acciones tomadas dentro de la comunidad universitaria para inaugurarlo, así como los pasos estratégicos requeridos para mantenerlo en funcionamiento. También describe las actividades llevadas a cabo que contribuyeron a redefinir el rol de un laboratorio de este tipo, eliminando la compartamentalización de misiones de tres escuelas laboratorio, bajo el enfoque de comunidades prácticas. Premisas que apoyan la integración de las tres misiones de las escuelas laboratorio estudiadas son discutidas, y se presenta un estudio de caso de un programa de investigación a través de comunidades practices, destacando las tres misiones.
