Energy reduction and efficiency in buildings

Created 16 Jun 2022| Updated 16 Jun 2022 | 9 articles

The rising cost of energy and the impact of energy use on our climate is a major concern for everyone involved with the built environment. The challenges of reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling our buildings is a global issue, with interventions required at a local level in response to climatic conditions, traditions, economy, and regulations. Building Research & Information (BRI) has a long tradition of publishing research into building performance, sustainability, and energy reduction. The article collection is a mechanism that allows the curation of articles as a themed anthology. Like any collection, difficult decisions must be made about what to include and what to leave out. The rationale was to include recently published articles that provide different perspectives on energy use in buildings to provide a coherent primer for readers and researchers in the field. We believe that this will be a valuable starting point for early career academics and readers wanting to discover more about energy reduction and building performance. The articles included provide glimpses into some of these challenges from a variety of perspectives. Topics include new build, adaption, and renovation, along with a variety of methodological approaches to cover technical and social aspects. With this article collection we hope to further inform and stimulate rapid advances in the energy performance of our buildings.
