Loss and Damage
Loss and damage refers to the effects and impacts of climate change that cannot be mitigated or adapted to. How to support developing countries suffering from loss and damage due to climate change is an important piece of ongoing international negotiations under the UNFCCC. These impacts include extreme weather events, like floods or droughts, which have increased in frequency due to climate change, but can also encompass other kinds of loss and damage. Economic loss and damage can take the form of job and property loss, while non-economic loss and damage includes losses to biodiversity, life, and cultural heritage. This special collection showcases current research on loss and damage, with respect to interdisciplinary approaches, policy-making, progress evaluation, and financial mechanisms.
