Journal overview

Cogent Education is a leading multidisciplinary open access journal, publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed articles across the breadth of educational research. The journal is led by Editor-in-Chief Professor John C.K. Lee (The Education University of Hong Kong), supported by an expert international Editorial Board. Our academic editors take an objective and constructive approach to peer review, ensuring each manuscript is evaluated on its own scholarly merits and research integrity. Article-level metrics let the research speak for itself.

  • Data Notes (recently opened, details below)
Publishes Data Notes from all areas covered by the scope of the journal. A Data Note describes a dataset, giving details of its collection, processing, software, file formats etc., without the requirement of novel analyses or ground breaking conclusions. It allows the reader to understand the when, how and why data was collected and what the data-product is.
Initially, this section will cover quantitative data only; not qualitative data. Authors should note that it is not a requirement that a related research paper has been published in Cogent Education: all contributions will be carefully considered.
Further information on this section can be found in this editorial piece and on the journal’s Instructions for Authors page.
  • Physical and Health Education (recently opened, details below)
We welcome international submissions on physical and health education from academics and professionals working within our global community. This could include those working within the social sciences, education, physical education, health, sport and physical activity settings. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, pedagogy, policy, curriculum, teacher education, participants and practitioners’ lived experiences, diversity, equity and inclusion. Original submissions should offer theoretical, empirical, conceptual, and/or methodological contributions to developing knowledge and understanding in the field of physical and/or health education. The section does not consider articles on medical education, such as training for nurses and doctors.
  • Religious, Moral and Values Education (recently opened, details below)
Welcomes original, scholarly submissions that explore a range of theories, practices, and methodologies in relation to religious, moral and values education (either separately or in combination, and from any faith tradition, or none) across all sectors of learning (early childhood, primary/elementary, secondary, tertiary) as well as community contexts. Empirical research, conceptual work and critical analysis in relation to globalisation and religious, moral and values education is also encouraged. Authors should keep in mind the nexus between theory and practice, and where possible, signal ways in which their research has, or could be, applied in practical contexts.

Peer Review Policy:

All Research Articles and Review Articles published in the journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial Editor screening and anonymised review by at least two independent reviewers. All Data Notes published in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial screening by a Senior Editor or Editor and anonymised review by at least one independent reviewer.

The journal reserves the right to reject submissions after editorial screening should the submission not meet certain minimum requirements to be sent for external review.
