This special collection highlights papers in Applied Phycology which contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Algae are hugely important in ecosystem function, and also have the potential to play a vital part in the development of new biofuels, food sources, pharmaceutically active compounds, algal carbon capture and countless other applications to benefit the wellbeing of humans and the planet. As such they can contribute to the sustainable development of human society as well as ecosystem health.

The papers in this special collection comprise two reviews, one discussing CO2 remediation in seaweed aquaculture and the other seaweed resources on Argentina, together with six original research papers addressing topics such as bioactive compounds from algae, climate change impacts on algae and the use of algae to reduce methane emissions as well as the possible role of seaweed culture in sequestration of CO2. These papers cover a range of the UN Sustainable development goals including, but not limited to, Goal 3 “Good health”, Goal 13 “Climate action” and Goal 14 “Life below water”.
